Job Description:
Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

This role is a key position within the team as the company quickly moves towards FAA certification. The applicant will be expected to create validated standards and procedures for substantiation of various types of aircraft structural components. Candidates are expected to have extensive experience in stress analysis or materials and process engineering for aircraft and be intimately familiar with FAA Certification and existing standards. Prior experience with small aircraft certification is a must. The selected candidate will have a unique opportunity to have a high-level influence on Joby’s design and analysis standards.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain validated structural analysis methods and standards in alignment with current industry standards and regulatory guidance.
  • Develop and execute test plans and test methods to validate analysis tools and generate statistical design values for use in structural sizing
  • Ensure that the deliverables are completed according to the agreed work, plan, time, cost and quality.
  • Produce white papers outlining novel substantiation approaches
  • Build and experimentally validate efficient, semi-automated tools for analysis of composite panels (monolithic or stiffened), metallic details, and joints

Required
  • B.S. in aerospace, mechanical, civil engineering, or another relevant discipline
  • 5+ years of experience creating analysis documents in FAA certification context
  • Excellent understanding of composite materials failure modes
  • Understanding of statistical basis (A-Basis or B-Basis)
  • Proficiency with engineering calculations tools (Python, VBA, FORTRAN etc..)
  • Ability to deliver detailed analysis templates, reports and certification documents.
  • Strong understanding of Finite Element Analysis and classical hand calculation methods
  • Composite Damage Tolerance experience
Desired
  • M.S. in relevant discipline
  • 10+ years of working in small aircraft structural certification
  • Extensive experience performing tests, analysis and correlation of composite or metallic structures
  • Understanding of analysis, substantiation, and the linkage of process integrity to the methods for bonded joints
