Product Safety Engineer
Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria hybrid working 1-2 days on site per month – 12 month duration – Pay rate 55.31 p/h PAYE basic (63.35 p/h including holiday pay) or 74.68 p/h Umbrella
We are looking for a Product Safety Engineer to work for our defence client. Working in a growing multi-programme product safety capability, with a team of Product Safety Engineers (with a range of qualification and experience) delivering quality outputs to a defined programme schedule. Your main task will be to provide input to a safety case report for a vehicle control function of a submarine navigation system (route plotting, anti-collision plotting, etc).
Supporting the Vehicle Control Key Safety Function (specifically navigation functions) by:
- Undertaking Product Safety functional analysis (Hazard Identification and Hazard Analysis) in support of the submarine design.
- Producing Product Safety functional justification reports.
- Liaising with a wide range of stakeholders both external and internal to the business.
- Providing technical guidance and direction to less experienced team members.
- Providing specialist Safety advice to system engineers on a range of Submarine Programmes.
Requirements:
- Understanding of Functional Safety, specifically involving functional safety of complex software-centric systems.
- Understanding of techniques to support Hazard Identification (HAZID) and Hazard Analysis (HAZAN).
- Previous Submarine experience, particularly Vehicle Control (Navigation) related functions would be desirable.
- Proven ability producing Formal Safety Assessments.
- Proven record of team working.
- Proven record of delivering quality outputs to schedule.
- Ability to produce technical reports to a high standard.
- Able to undertake Probabilistic Analysis.
- Demonstrable knowledge of design, manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and testing submarines lifecycle phases.
- Awareness of the challenges posed by the environment that the product will be exposed to.
- The ability to analyse complex problems and identify the most critical issues.
- Ability to interpret technical data and produce clear, logical and robust safety arguments.
- Knowledge of standards such as IEC 61508, Def Stan 00-55 / 00-56 or DO-178C would be beneficial.
Additional Information:
The successful candidate will need to gain a UK MOD Security Clearance to SC level before starting. A new SC application will be sponsored if required.
