Areas of responsibility include requirements analysis and requirements management, impact assessments, system design, system performance, system integration, system safety, system security design and strategic system enhancement planning.

Key Accountabilities:

  • System Architecture and Integration: Your role entails analyzing system requirements and modifications resulting from corporate objectives, regulatory requirements, as well as improvements in safety and efficiency. You are accountable for determining whether the current system architecture can accommodate these changes or if adjustments to the architecture are necessary. This involves an understanding of the existing system requirements, how they are impacted, and identifying appropriate hardware and software components, and ensuring a smooth integration of these components.

  • Plan, organize: Your role involves overseeing project planning meticulously, ensuring objectives are clearly defined and milestones are achievable within set timelines. Your role also involves organizing tasks efficiently and it is paramount, delegating responsibilities among junior architects while providing guidance and support to foster growth and maintain project momentum.

  • Direct: Your role involves effective team communication and coordination, ensuring alignment with project goals, and offering technical expertise to overcome challenges. Monitoring progress and identifying potential bottlenecks are critical to maintaining project schedules and quality standards.

  • Leading by example: You will play a pivotal role in setting a high standard of professionalism, problem-solving, and collaboration. By guiding and mentoring junior solution architects, you foster a culture of innovation and excellence, empowering them to develop their skills and approach challenges with confidence.

  • Risk Management and Safety Assurance: A crucial aspect of your role is to guarantee the safety and reliability of the air traffic management system. You will be accountable for identifying potential risks, formulating risk mitigation strategies, and implementing safety measures to minimize the possibility of system failures or malfunctions that could have an adverse impact on air traffic management operations.

  • System Testing and Validation: Your role will encompass identifying and define scope the testing implications of system changes and ensuring that these changes comply with the necessary compliance, performance and safety standards. This may involve conducting functional tests, stress tests, and performance evaluations to identify and address any issues or limitations.

  • Collaboration and Communication: In this role, you may work with various stakeholders, including Air Traffic Controllers, OSR, software developers, software testers, and external domestic and international project teams. Effective collaboration and communication skills are essential to ensure a smooth flow of information, coordination of work activities, and addressing any concerns or issues that arise during the development, deployment, and maintenance of the air traffic management system.

Job Requirements

Education:

Graduation from a recognized university in systems engineering, computer science, or an acceptable combination of education, experience and training.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years of work experience in the planning, design, implementation, and validation of requirements for ATM systems.

  • Experience in the interpretation of operational requirements and the development of Technical Specifications such as Software Requirements Specification (SRS) and Interface Control Documents (ICDs) for large-scale safety or mission critical systems.

  • Experience investigating, analyzing, and resolving complex software related problems and overseeing software development activities, software integration and validation or leading engineering project teams.

Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of systems engineering and software architecture design principles and methodologies. This includes knowledge of system requirements analysis, software design methodologies, configuration management, and system validation processes.

  • Knowledge of system safety, regulatory standards and ATM systems.

  • Knowledge of requirements management tools, problem tracking tools, configuration management tools and test management tools, such as Visio, JIRA, Azure DevOps and IBM Jazz.

  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies and working in an agile environment using tools like Microsoft Azure DevOps.

  • Knowledge of modern data middleware technologies, networking, communication standards and protocols.

  • Working knowledge of best engineering practices regarding documentation and processes.

Abilities

  • Ability to set new and adapt to changing priorities, to work under minimal supervision, to coordinate the day-to-day activities of self and of team, and to handle multiple concurrent projects.

  • Ability to analyze, investigate, evaluate, plan, coordinate tasks and propose software changes to improve the air traffic management system.

  • Ability to coach, share knowledge, and actively develop the skills and competency of other key team members.

  • Ability to effectively influence stakeholders, negotiate agreements, build relationships, understand organizational dynamics, and apply change management principles in order to facilitate successful implementation of changes within the air traffic management system.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally with external vendors, technical and non-technical employees and management.

  • Ability to write clear, cohesive, and concise documentation that is easily understandable by colleagues, management, stakeholders and customers.

Working conditions

  • This position is based at the Ottawa Technical Systems Centre and is a hybrid position with a minimum – 3 days per week on site. 

  • Travel maybe required.
